The En Plein Air
Dear Artists,

The Seldovia Arts Council wishes to invite you to discover Higgy’s En Plein Air in our gorgeous corner of Alaska this coming summer solstice. We would love to have artists of every talent, both hobbyists and professionals, join the fine arts portion of our
Solstice Celebration which will occur June 20th - June 23rd, 2019.

Seldovia is a mecca for artists; we have many local artists working in watercolors, oils, acrylics, digital art, paper cutting art, pottery and sculptures.

This will be the 6th annual Higgy’s En Plein Air, which occurs alongside our 20th annual Summer Solstice Musical Festival.  It all begins with participating musicians and artists boarding the Seldovia Village Tribe’s MV Kachemak Voyager for the trip from Homer to Seldovia on Thursday, June 20th. There will definitely be a musical jam session on the way to Seldovia. The Seldovia Arts Council sponsors workshops and busking during the days of Friday and Saturday, with wonderful evening performances to follow on each of those dates. When participating artists are not busy creating their own works of art, we hope they come and enjoy the music.

Seldovia is one of the most picturesque little towns in Alaska. Everything is within walking distance of the center of town. You can stroll along the boardwalk, go for a walk on the Otterbahn Trail, or enjoy the harbor with all its beautiful boats and dinghies. You can amble into a local restaurant or coffee shop for a snack or a meal. Then, breathe:  the air is fresh and even on a rainy day the salt air will take you back to the days of commercial fishing, to the world of the sea otter and sailing ships. We are a small community of approximately 400 people, which is only accessible by boat or small plane. We have a few B & B's, great camping areas, several restaurants, a small hotel, a post office, two churches, a grocery store and a bar and grill with a full dinner menu. The little downtown is paved, while the rest of town sports dirt roads.

Our headlining artists this year are Emil Vinberg and Jen Jolliff. We would like to share their talents with you.

Emil Vinberg is a Native Alaskan artist born in Seldovia, currently living in the Pacific Northwest. Emil started painting as a child and was encouraged by a local artist who saw his potential and helped him develop his style and encouraged his painting He is inspired by elders, family and the aquatic environments of Alaska and the Northwest. His favorite mediums are water color and acrylics. Emil loves the outdoors, boating and spending time with his family and friends. He is a multiyear cancer survivor which helps to direct and balance his life. He is also a sailor, marketer and social media consultant.

As an Alaskan artist for more than 20 years, Jen Jolliff has a reputation for being capable, cooperative, adaptable and innovative. Jen has created more than a dozen permanent art pieces in schools through the Teaching Artist program plus four large-scale 1% for Art installations. Whether she is painting a mural for the PAC's acoustic shell, carving a lively menagerie of wooden sculptures for a library or working on a collaborative mural in a school, she is always conscious of how the piece she is creating will relate to its architectural and social environment. She loves to craft a moment of interaction which invites the viewer to make connections between themselves, the artwork and the space around them.

There will be an En Plein Air welcoming reception at the Gateway Pavilion, located adjacent to the boat harbor, at 9:00 a.m. on Friday June 21st with maps available of town and surrounds for your assistance. Our headlining artists will give public presentations featuring their art form and techniques at 11 a.m. on Friday. “En Plein Air” artists will be surprised and inspired at every turn in and around Seldovia. Our sunrises and sunsets are breathtaking, whether viewed across the bay, over the surrounding mountains, or from the beaches. There are fascinating vistas of the small boat harbor, the old boardwalk, the bridge and slough, Main Street, and Inside and Outside Beaches, all within easy walking distance. Locations for joyful work are endless, and those in town for the Festival would love to watch artists at work. All artists are asked to bring their own supplies and easels.

There will be a Silent Art Auction, Sunday, June 23rd at the Gateway Pavilion starting at 1:30 p.m. and finishing at 3:30 p.m. with snacks and coffee available.  All sales will go directly to the artists. Artists are encouraged to exhibit their work and participate in the silent auction.  Please bring art work to the Pavilion at 1 p.m. In preparation for the auction, each artist will be provided a form on which to place the title of their work and the minimum bid they will require.

In addition to work that you may complete while in Seldovia, you are encouraged to bring other previous works that you would like to show, sell or put in the silent auction.  The Seldovia Arts Council may be able to assist with credit card purchases if necessary.  Sunday evening, beginning at 5 p.m., there will be a BBQ/potluck at Valisa Higman’s studio along Schooner Beach. We will provide transportation to ferry you to the beach, just a few minutes away.

We hope all artists will consider this an open invitation, not only for the time during our Solstice Celebration, but also for the entire summer. At other times when artists might visit, the natural beauty will remain the same, and the artists will be able to sell their work in Seldovia as they see fit.

Seldovia has the Boardwalk Hotel and some B & B’s. It also has a nice RV park and beautiful camping sites on Outside Beach, each with lavatory facilities. For your planning and comfort, please reference the following regarding lodging, availability of food and
